Walked to the grocery store after work in Lunenburg and saw this when walking to and from my car.....ummm...
If you can’t tell, these are those angled parking spaces in a very large lot and that is a 9th gen Honda Civic sedan pretty much in the middle of a lane. I thought that surely this couldn’t be somebody who is SO bad at parking they had no idea they were not inside the lines and halfway across the driving lane in between rows of spaces. I was right! They WEREN’T
so bad at parking they didn’t know they weren’t inside the lines....
...they were so bad at parking that the
car is
a stick-shift and they
forget to set the parking brake
or have it in the appropriate gear so it wouldn’t roll away. There is a SLIGHT downhill slope to the right and the car was in first gear...they are just damn lucky it didn’t end up rolling
in somebody’s car in the rows to the right...

I almost did that yesterday. Got out of the car, was about to hit the lock button and then when “PARKING BRAKE” in my head. I’m Car was in neutral and the brake wasn’t on

I only think I’ve managed to pull the same forgetful act when I first got my Subaru when I was new-ish to driving stick. I always try to double-check it’s in the right gear with the brake set when I get out every since!

I did that once when I first started my delivery job. I hadn’t driven an auto in a while, got out made a delivery came back And found the car in drive. Thankfully I had set the parking brake and parked into a snowbank, so even if wheels started to spring I don’t think it would have gone anywhere

Why not? There’s nothing to lose putting it in gear. Don’t even wear out the clutch.

pull up. wriggle the shifter to see its in neutral, then yank on the handbrake

...and then clutch out, put it in 1st, clutch in. I’ve had a handbrake cable snap before.

I’m a bit confused. Do you mean it wasn’t in 1st? Or are you saying 1st isn’t the appropriate gear?
I guess I’m asking what gear you think is appropriate, reverse?
because all the higher gears decrease the rolling resistance, right? (Sorry, haven’t driven Manuel in 7 years so trying to remember some of the theory.)

Yes, it was in first, yes higher gears decrease the rolling resistance, but the slope was facing down from the front of the car, so it was in a gear that allowed it to roll. Luckily the resistance was what saved it from rolling any more than it did, but it should
’ve been in reverse with the parking brake set as to not roll forward at all.
